Regional Champion!

We finally did it again! Our team won the regional finals of the Sparkasse Volleyball Championship for girls.

The team, who had not been beaten in all the preliminary rounds and were thus seen as being among the possible winners, had to fight very hard for this success. After beating the NMS Brückl quite easily in two sets during the semi-finals, the very strong team of BG/BRG Lerchenfeldstraße awaited them on home soil.

The final match turned out to be as action-packed as expected: The first set was very close with our girls managing to win with a narrow 25:23. The second set did not start as planned and soon the team of Lerchenfeld were 20:10 in the lead. With an unbelievable effort and great team spirit, our girls managed to overcome this heavy setback in a nail-biting comeback, and win point for point until Lerchenfeld’s last matchpoint at 24:23. Finally, the opponents’ effort paid off and the won this set with 25:23. At this point it was clear that only strong nerves and a bit of luck would decide who the winner is. Speaking of luck, we won the service at the start of the third set and soon managed to gain a comfortable 5:0 lead. The girls played smart and almost perfect then, and never risked the victory which finally arrived at a standing of 15:8.

The performance of the team is even more outstanding, since almost all the players started to play volleyball in school and didn’t only have to picked up well trained and educated from a local club. Hard work, training and the will to spend extra time finally paid of and were the fathers of this success. Having a very solid, strong team plus an extraordinarily talented player (Magdalena Rabitsch), we are looking forward to the national finals in Purkersdorf in April.
